In 1920, the three-year-old Wichita Falls Golf\nClub acquired a 23.12 acre tract bordered by Bridwell Street, Brook Avenue, Ardath\nAvenue, and Speedway Avenue. The early 1920s were prosperous “Millionaire\nYears” in the city of Wichita Falls and the club’s membership grew. By 1923, a magnificent two story brick\nbuilding with sixteen inch thick walls, fourteen foot ceilings, and a basement\nwas completed as home to the Golf Club, with access from both Victory Avenue\nand Bridwell Street. Unfortunately, the Depression took a toll on the city, and\nby 1938, the Club had all but liquidated. \nThe property was acquired by Walter D. Cline, Sr. in March of that year,\nand it was not sold again until 1960, when Lester J. Stewart bought it for\n$16,250. The Stewarts lived in the home until their deaths, and their\nphotograph still hangs in the home. The property briefly served as home to a\nMSU fraternity and had a short stint as a bed and breakfast.

\n\n

Today this building still stands solid. Most\nof the interior is original, with elegant crown molding, carved solid wood door\nand window surrounds, and unique hardware. A graceful staircase serves as a\nfocal point of the entry, and telephone alcoves provide interesting\naccents. Double doors invite visitors\ninto a sweeping great room with a mantelpiece on the north wall and registers\nunder the windows of the south wall. Rooms on the second floor were altered by\nthe Clines to accommodate various family members, while the fraternity\nconverted the spacious attic into a game room with two gas burning fireplaces\nin the 1960s.

\n\n

The home has had several owners since the\nStewart family. Presently, it is owned by John and Mary Ferguson. The Fergusons\nhave replaced the upstairs wooden balcony and used the metal railing from the\noriginal front door entrance for the new balcony.

This Spanish colonial home was built in 1927\nby Luther and Polly Hoffman. The roof tiles are typical red Mission tiles,\nshaped like half-cylinders. This and the open balconies with wood railings are\ntypical of the style. Luther worked as an attorney and had practiced law in\nWichita Falls since 1919. Polly was a well-known artist who trained at the\nPratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Their daughter, Polly Cox, also painted,\nand her book of watercolors of local historic homes and buildings was published\nin 1982. Some of their artwork can be seen in the interior niches.

\n\n

In 1944, J. Pickens Coleman purchased the\nhouse. He had moved to Wichita Falls in 1919, after serving as a first\nlieutenant in World War I, to work first as a consultant in petroleum\nengineering and valuation and then as an oil producer. Coleman opened oil\nfields in Kamay, Olney, and Tuckerville as Plains Production Company. He served\nas president of the North Texas Oil and Gas Association in 1946 and as a member\nof Midwestern University’s board of regents in 1956. His wife, Carobel, was an\naward-winning poet and local philanthropist. After his death in 1984, the house\nwas bequeathed to Rice University, his alma mater, and they sold the house to\nthe Wilsons.

\n\n

The Wilsons enlarged the kitchen, but stayed\ntrue to the style of the residence. Incredible tile floors, high ceilings,\narches, and stucco walls complement the Spanish style. In 2025, a major two\nstory addition was added to the back half of the home. This addition included a\nwalk-in closet, an upstairs laundry room, a new bathroom, as well as two large\nspaces for entertainment and exercise. \nAn elevator now connects the upper and lower floors.

Home to a meandering stream, this property was known as 106 Brookside Drive at the time of its construction in 1925. William E. Bristol, secretary-treasurer of the Plains Gas & Fuel Company, built the home for his widowed mother, Louise, who resided there until her death in 1956. Over those thirty years, the street named changed twice—first to Pembroke Drive in 1932 then to Pembroke Lane in 1938. The house stands in the Morningside neighborhood, where lots were first advertised in local papers in 1919.

This home is representative of a classic Tudor revival. It boasts a wide front chimney, multiple gabled roof including a small gabled front entryway, and a trio of casement windows beneath the front gable. A number of owners throughout the years have altered the house to meet their needs and styles.

Purchased by Michael and Susan Bahr in 2003, the home has been beautifully restored and maintained. Much of the interior woodwork, including the beautiful flooring, is original to the home. A focal point of the living room, the mantelpiece features a Mission-style Batchelder tile motif. Local artist Elizabeth Wall created the mural featured in the dining room, while the breakfast room includes the original build-in cupboard. Extensive remodeling projects in and about the house include the addition of a pergola in an updated backyard, as well as the addition of another bathroom, which expanded it to a two-bedroom, two-bath home. The Bahr’s most recent project has been to create a charming guest cottage with a Swedish spiral staircase.

Completed in December 1934, the brick house\nat 1500 Hayes was built by Reid Construction Company and designed by Voelcker\n& Dixon, a local architectural firm run by Herbert Voelcker and Jesse G.\nDixon. In addition to designing more than fifty homes in the Morningside and\nCountry Club neighborhoods, the firm also designed the Wichita Falls hospital,\ncity hall, the Hardin Administration Building at Midwestern State, and eleven\ncounty courthouses. The house cost\n$10,000 to build, or roughly $239,095 in today’s money.

By the time the house was finished, the\nFloral Heights neighborhood was several decades old. In 1909, an advertisement in the Wichita Falls Times hailed the\nsubdivision as “by far the most beautiful and choicest location” for new homes\nin the city. Initially, lots sold for $200 to $450, and developers lured future\nhomeowners with graded streets, concrete sidewalks, electric lights, and street\ncars.

The first owners of the house were Joseph\nand Eunice Wolf. Joseph worked as a farmer and owned several properties near\nCharlie. He had moved to Texas in 1894 from Nebraska and married Eunice Dobbs\nin 1902. The couple relocated from Clay County to the city of Wichita Falls to\nmove into 1500 Hayes. Yet, Joseph died just two years after the house was\nfinished. Eunice continued living there until 1946, hosting church gatherings\nand other meetings within the home. A devoted community member, she served as\npresident of the Wichita Farm and Ranch Club, a charter member of the Woman’s\nForum, a life member of the YMCA, and a board member of the Clay County Farm\nBureau.

After Eunice moved, the house passed through\na series of owners, including Ralph and Lucille Harper (1940s-1960s), Billie\nand Mary Ann Detrick (1960s-1980s), and Daryl and Gay Lyn Cagle\n(1980s-2000). The Looney family\npurchased the home in 2000.
